Mutomo is a settlement in Kenya's Kitui County, a semi-arid area. It is located in former Mutomo District of which Mutomo was its administrative centre.[1] It has 17,000, mostly poor, inhabitants.[2] It is located about 70 km from Kitui and 230 km from Nairobi. Mutomo can be reached by road through Machakos.[1]
The area is one of Kenya's poorest with clean water lacking and poor infrastructure, including the roads. Since children work, a significant number never go to school. Infectious diseases are a serious problem.[1]
