Weorgoran

The Weorgoran were a tribe or clan in Anglo-Saxon England, possibly forming an early settlement of the Hwicce sub-kingdom. The name literally means "people of the winding river" in Old English, and the Weorgoran settled on or near the site of an earlier Roman settlement (possibly Vertis), establishing a new Anglo-Saxon settlement of Weorgoran ceaster (modern Worcester).[1]

The Weorgoran are likely to have been of West Saxon origin, having settled into the area some time after the West Saxon defeat of the Britons at the Battle of Dyrham in 577 and before the settlement was given a bishop and a cathedral in 680.[2]
