Excerpt
Excerpt: A recent national survey indicates that the American public has only a superficial awareness of the importance of the ocean to their daily lives, let alone its importance to all life on the planet.1 The ocean is a source of food and medicine, controls global climate, provides energy, supplies jobs, supports economies, and reveals information about the planet that cannot be gained from any other source. The ocean conceals the highest mountains and deepest canyons on Earth. Exploration of the ocean has revealed amazing organisms straight out of science fiction and entire ecosystems previously unknown to humankind. But the extent of what we do not know-what remains undiscovered-sparks the imagination. With so much of the marine environment still unexplored, the ocean can be viewed as the final frontier on Earth. While most people do not recognize the number of benefits the ocean provides, or its potential for further discovery, many do feel a positive connection with it, sensing perhaps that the vitality of the sea is directly related to human survival. This connection can be a powerful tool for increasing awareness of, interest in, and responsible action toward the marine environment, and is critical to building an ocean stewardship ethic, strengthening the nation’s science literacy, and creating a new generation of ocean leaders.
